The Chaturanga Challenge
.
I read Maura Barclay’s article, ‘Did you know Chaturanga is Sanskrit for Shoulder Shredder?’ while ago, and it’s really stayed with me, I’ve been retraining my own chaturanga, teaching some the principles in class and even emailing the article out to students. Chaturanga doesn’t really seem to be anyone’s favourite pose to practice, and it’s a challenge to teach- there is a lot that can go awry and loads of information to impart in the (usual) single breath that we hold this pose, although since it is a asana we come back to many times a class, many times a week, all those misalignment habits can stack up into an injury. I found Maura’s follow up article with pictures really helpful, to explain just how and where things can go wrong..
I’ve also found it really productive, especially if you can’t hold the full pose for long or are working with an injury, to practice standing with your hands on the wall and feet on the floor, like your chaturanga has rotated 90 degrees. That way you can really program in the alignment information, without the weight bearing.
