Unnatural Landscapes: The Human Impact on Earth’s Surface.
Edward Burtynsky’s photography shows how mining, farming and other industrial activities have altered landscapes around the world.

There are 10 photos total, 6 are shown here that include:

  1. TAILINGS: Nickel tailings, waste from mining, found floating in a river in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, from 1996.
  2. OLD TIRES: Oxford Tire Pile #8 is a part of Burtynsky’s Urban Mines series that shows two mounds of discarded rubber in Westley, Calif., from 1999.
  3. GOLD MINING: In 2007, Burtynsky documented Silver Lake’s gold mining operations in Lake Lefroy, in western Australia.
  4. QUARRIES: Iberia Quarries # 8 shows Cochicho Company in the process of mining for minerals in Pardais, Portugal, in 2006. This is part of Burtynsky’s large quarries series.
  5. OIL SPILL: The Discoverer Enterprise, a drill ship nearly three U.S. football fields long, floats on an oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico on May 11, 2010.
  6. DRYLAND FARMING: Abstract crop fields of Monegros County in Aragon, Spain was taken from a 600-meter aerial view. This image is part of Edward Burtynsky’s most recent series from 2010.
